The Bad and the Beautiful is one of those films that I have to watch any time I come across it. I appreciated learning the behind-the-scenes info, like the two articles up which the film was based, and the real-life personages who inspired the characters. Your breakdown of the film was first-rate, and I was intrigued by your take on the ending -- you certainly gave me something to think about! Thanks so much for contributing your piece to the blogathon!Karenhttp://www.shadowsandsatin.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1019017536875409609.post-66152691581775101482017-01-03T18:00:55.075-06:002017-01-03T18:00:55.075-06:00Totally agree with the Gloria Grahame take. I love her in everything she did, and she does milk this part for everything it's worth, but I sort of think the Oscar was a cumulative award for both this and Sudden Fear. While Minnelli's hand guided it well and all the background elements, cinematography etc., are excellent it's the Kirk Douglas show all the way that makes this an arresting view. I'm a fan of both Gable and Tracy but can't envision either making this character work nearly as well as Kirk.

Lana is also quite vivid in one of her very best performances, if she was ever going to be nominated it should have been here or in The Postman Always Rings Twice not Peyton Place. It does have that great cast of character actors as well Elaine Stewart is terrific and I'm a big fan of Paul Stewart-an excellent actor little remembered sadly.

The one award it won that I don't understand is Gloria Grahame's prize for Supporting Actress. Don't get me wrong I adore Gloria Grahame and she does as much with the role as can be done but the role itself is a nothing. She even had a better performance in the same year in Sudden Fear they could have awarded instead of this. The real disadvantage of her winning was that it more than likely cost her any sort of award consideration the next year for her career best performance of Debbie in The Big Heat. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1019017536875409609.post-50822357058894601872016-12-10T14:23:51.222-06:002016-12-10T14:23:51.222-06:00Thanks for stopping by, everyone. That's power that doesn't often make it onto the big screen. Turner, Dick Powell, and Gloria Grahame all excel here, but it is definitely Douglas who runs the show.Danilo Castrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11669067717986753127noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1019017536875409609.post-57544695729025234722016-12-09T22:17:29.178-06:002016-12-09T22:17:29.178-06:00Great write-up on this one! I was always partial to the Dick Powell segment, probably because I appreciated watching the writer work, but I enjoy the rest as well. Gilbert Roland is great in this! I think you're right about all the bit players all being highlights of it.DKorenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05819702518388146971noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1019017536875409609.post-15457151987940764462016-12-09T14:57:22.820-06:002016-12-09T14:57:22.820-06:00Lana was known as the "sweater girl".
